How to Calculate Break Time
Break time math starts with full shift length, then subtracts lunch break minutes to find paid time remaining. Overnight shifts add 24 hours when end time is before start time on the clock.
Formula
Shift length = Shift end − Shift start
Paid time remaining = Shift length − Lunch break minutes
- Calculate gross shift minutes from start and end times.
- Subtract total lunch break minutes.
- Express paid time as h:mm and decimal hours.
- Click Calculate to run the calculation and update the results panel.
Example Calculation
A 9:00 AM–5:00 PM shift with a 60-minute lunch break.
Worked example
Shift length = 8 h 00 min (480 min)
Break deducted = 60 min
Paid time remaining = 420 min = 7:00 (7.00 h)
