How to Calculate Time Duration
Duration is elapsed time between a start and end clock time. When the end is on the next calendar day, add 24 hours before subtracting start from end.
Formula
Duration minutes = End time − Start time
If overnight: Duration minutes = (End + 24 h) − Start
Decimal hours = Duration minutes ÷ 60
- Convert start and end times to minutes from midnight.
- If end is before start, add 24 hours to the end time.
- Subtract start from end and format as h:mm or decimal hours.
- Click Calculate to run the calculation and update the results panel.
Example Calculation
An overnight span from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM the next day.
Worked example
End (adjusted) = 6:00 AM + 24 h = 30:00 on timeline
Duration = 30:00 − 22:00 = 8 h 00 min
Result = 8:00 (8.00 decimal hours)
