  • Click Calculate to update pay estimates

How to Calculate Overtime Pay

Split total hours into regular and overtime at your threshold. Regular pay uses your base rate; overtime pay uses rate × multiplier (often 1.5×) on hours above the threshold.

Formula

Regular hours = min(Total hours, OT threshold)

Overtime hours = max(0, Total hours − OT threshold)

Gross pay = (Regular × Rate) + (OT × Rate × Multiplier)

  1. Enter total hours worked and hourly rate.
  2. Hours at or below the threshold are regular time.
  3. Hours above the threshold are overtime.
  4. Multiply each bucket by the appropriate rate to estimate gross pay.
  5. Click Calculate to run the calculation and update the results panel.

Example Calculation

45 hours worked at $20.00/hour with a 40-hour threshold and 1.5× overtime multiplier.

Worked example

Regular = 40 h × $20.00 = $800.00

Overtime = 5 h × ($20.00 × 1.5) = $150.00

Gross pay = $800.00 + $150.00 = $950.00

Free overtime calculator and pay estimator: 45 hours worked at $20 hourly rate, 40-hour OT threshold, 1.5× multiplier — 40 regular hours, 5 overtime hours, $800 regular pay, $150 OT pay, $950 gross pay after Calculate
45 hours at $20/hr with a 40-hour OT threshold → 5 overtime hours and $950.00 gross pay after Calculate.
